We headed out at sunrise to photograph red deer (Cervus elaphus) in the Moscow Region, Russia. We found a small herd grazing peacefully in an open field, with the males occasionally locking antlers in playful sparring matches during the autumn deer rut.
We managed to find an ideal photography position, with the rising sun shining directly into the deer’s eyes. Standing on the sunlit side, we remained almost invisible to the animals, allowing us to capture their natural behavior without disturbing them.
As the sun rose, the frost-covered landscape sparkled with thousands of tiny crystals. The golden backlight created magical conditions for nature photography, but also presented a serious technical challenge. The combination of bright frost and strong backlighting confused the camera’s light meter, requiring constant exposure adjustments.
Despite the challenges, we captured beautiful wildlife images of red deer grazing, sparring, and moving through the frosty autumn landscape in the soft morning light.
One of the most memorable wildlife photography mornings of this autumn. Sometimes, the first frost and a perfect sunrise are all you need for extraordinary nature photography.
